“Brigade commander to Kahalani. Start moving east. Over.”

“Where to? Over.”

“Move to take position on the ridges north of Kuneitra facing east. A large Syrian task force is approaching the town.”

Late in the afternoon, endless hours it seemed after the jets had strafed the camp, Kahalani and his tank force finally rolled off to face the enemy. The quickest route was through Kuneitra, but he decided not to lead his battalion into the northern town. A Syrian bazooka team could be crouched on a rooftop or hiding in a doorway. Cripple the lead tank, and the whole column would be strung out on a narrow street, easy targets. Instead, the battalion crossed the fields of Kibbutz Merlon Golan. Wherever Kahalani looked he saw deep craters gouged out of the farmland by the afternoon’s incessant shelling. The clawed, ripped earth affected him beyond any actual damage that had been done. It connected him directly to his own home, his own family. “We are going off to defend our nation,” he told the men over the intercom. “We will protect Israel.”

In the evening’s first shadows, Kahalani deployed his tanks on top of Booster Ridge. He knew the position well, having scouted it days ago with Yanosh. In his mind was a map of its tels and its ravines. The ramps were arranged too close together to suit him, but if the tanks had to come down from the firing positions, there were plenty of places to hide. It was not the worst ground to make a stand.

As darkness spread over the ridge, his tanks mounted the ramps. To the east, Kahalani saw pillars of dust moving toward him.
